Accessibility

The ECOLE House at 3559 Rue University has recently undergone an accessibility audit.  We will update our website with the results as soon as they are shared with us.  In the meantime, we regret to inform that our space is not wheelchair accessible and has no elevator.  There are four steps up to the front door and a heavy door into an entryway with a buzzer system.  Once visitors are buzzed in, there is another heavy door to access the main floor.  Our main common space is on the second floor, up one flight of stairs, and the kitchen and dining room are in the basement, down one flight of stairs.  Most of the doors in the space are heavy, including into the washrooms.

All washrooms are single-use and non-gendered.  There are unfortunately no handrails next to the toilets or sinks.

There are two quiet spaces available in the house, one large double-room on the third floor that is commonly used as a study space (Room #9/13), and another smaller room on the entrance floor that is used as the ECOLE office (Room #2).  Both rooms have two desks and chairs.

All rooms have fluorescent lighting, though during the day many rooms can be lit with natural light through large windows.  We also have a small number of lamps and string lights available that are sufficient to light our smaller meeting spaces, so please let us know if you would like to use these for any event.

Because ECOLE not only a community space but also home to eight individuals, we cannot guarantee that ECOLE is a scent-free space.  For more information on scent-free spaces and the impacts of scents on accessibility, read this information package.

Children are welcome to attend any ECOLE events.  We are happy to provide childcare and/or whisper translation for any meeting, discussion, film screening, workshop, or other event with ECOLE, and they will be already provided at some large events such as our Annual General Meeting.   If you would like childcare or whisper translation, please don’t hesitate to email us at ecoleproject@gmail.com.  We ask that you let us know at least three days before the event so we can guarantee childcare / translation.  (Si vous avez besoin de traduction chuchotée entre français et anglais, nous pouvons le fournir heureusement et gratuitement.  S.V.P. nous-contactez trois jours avant l’évènement pour le demandez.)

If you would like to know more, have questions or suggestions, or there are any ways we can make participating in ECOLE more accessible for you, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us at ecoleproject@gmail.com.
